Legends of Vanhyr
The Northlands are populated by men who once lived as slaves to the Hjalldarr, and the centuries of servitude was burned deeply into the collective memory of the Northmen. Fiercely independent, quick to fight and slow to forgive, the Northmen have become a force with whom to be reckoned in the cold lands beyond the mountains.
The individualist nature of the Northmen dictates that no one king is able to wield too much power for too long. Because of this, they are broken into many scattered tribes and kingdoms, each jealous of the other’s lands, wealth and women. Warfare is common among these tribes, and the practice of it ensures that successive generations of Northmen are battle-hardened, fit, and well-suited for military service. Because of this,
they found themselves uniquely capable of filling the void of manpower left during the near-constant wars between Andor and Kalmar. Serving as mercenaries to both sides, the Northmen soon earned the reputation of being hardy, vicious and brave. In Andor, the lack of coin meant that their service was often paid in lands – many veterans of the wars now make their home in the lands between Valdyr’s Pass, Northwood and the Doomwolds. As a result, the northern populace of Andor, pushed out of their lands during this resettlement, founded the lands of the Far Holds.
Today, the Northmen stretch from the farthest reaches of the Wispering Sea to the Wintertide Shores, where hundreds of their number seasonally erect fishing camps along the craggy coastlines. Some enterprising Northmen even raid the shores of the Far Holds, or peddle their wares along the Scourge Straits and into the lands of the Barons.
